National Mental Health Program (NMHP)
1. Introduction-
a. Launched in 1982; but still not run in all the districts of country
b. 11 institutions – for training
2. Aims-
a. Prevention & treatment of mental disorders
b. Integration with general health services
3. Objectives-
a) To ensure availability & accessibility of mental health care for all
b) To encourage application of mental health knowledge in health care c) To promote community participation (self-help)
4. Strategies-
a. Integration of mental health with primary health care through NMHP
b. Provision of tertiary care institutes for treatment of mental disorders
c. Eradication of stigma & protection of rights
5. Components – (District Mental health program)
a. Training programs for health worker
b. Public education – to increase awareness & decreases stigma
c. Early diagnosis& treatment
d. Modernization of mental hospitals
e. Upgrade psychiatry department in medical college
