Ovarian Cyst(PCOD) : Its Symptoms, Diagnosis, Causes and Treatment

Q) What are Ovarian Cysts?

PCOD-polycystic ovarian disease

A) An ovarian cyst is a large fluid sac that can develop within or on an ovary. It can be simple, which means thin walled filled with fluid or can be complex that it is may contain thick fluid, blood or solid areas.

Q) How common are Ovarian Cysts?

A) Ovarian Cyst is very common. Most women are unaware that they are often without any symptom and disappear spontaneously with time. But 1 in 10 women may need surgery at some point in their lives.

Q) What are the Symptoms?

A) They are often asymptomatic and found

• incidentally during physical examination by Gynaecologist, or

• when a patient shows some symptoms like nausea, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, pelvis, lower back, thigh, and unusual bleeding.

Q) How are Ovarian Cysts Diagnosed?

A) As said they are usually diagnosed by

• a physical examination by a gynaecologist

• imaging studies

• a pelvic ultrasound or an MRI

Q) What are the Causes of Ovarian Cyst?

A) The most common causes of ovarian cysts are

• Hormonal problem – Hormonal Problems as seen in Polycystic Ovarian Disease.

• Endometriosis – In women who have endometriosis they can develop a cyst filled with blood called endometrioma.

• Pregnancy – In early pregnancy, a small ovarian cyst called a corpus luteal cyst normally develops to support the pregnancy until the placenta forms.

• Severe pelvic infections – In case of severe pelvic infections it can spread to the ovaries and fallopian tubes and cause cysts to form.

Q) Can Ovarian Cyst affect Fertility?

A) Not all ovarian cysts affect fertility. Some cysts that become very large and require treatment by surgery or medications can affect fertility. Polycystic ovaries and endometrioma are known to affect fertility.

Q) Can Ovarian Cyst cause Cancer?

A) Yes, rarely ovarian cysts can be cancerous. The risk increases with age. Post-menopausal women with ovarian cysts have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Q) What are the Treatments of Ovarian Cysts?

A) The treatment option is dependent on the patient’s age, their fertility status, symptoms and how large the cyst is. Treatment can be conservative or medical in which patient is told to wait and watch as the majority of cysts disappear on their own. In case of larger cysts or symptomatic like pain during periods or in cases of twisting of the ovary then surgical removal of the cyst is recommended. Complex cyst usually requires further evaluation and surgical removal may be needed.

Q) Why come to Drchetancreation for the treatment of Ovarian Cyst?

A) drchetancreation is a clinic with International standards and high success rate that uses advanced fertility treatments and enable couples with severe infertility problems to successfully conceive.

As we know that all ovarian cysts do not cause infertility. Some cysts tend to go on their own and some can be managed through medications. But a cause like the polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrioma, and some ovarian tumour a patient should see a doctor sooner as it may reduce fertility if left untreated, in fact, a further plan of fertility treatment should be timely discussed. In cases where they are looking for pregnancy, we treat these patients with the individualistic treatment plan. In some cases where the patient have been trying for a long time or have some other factors causing infertility, we at Medicover can maximise their chance of fertility by IVF technology.

In some cases of a complex cyst, we have a team of doctors who have vast experience and have had advanced training in performing minimally invasive surgery that is laparoscopy for the removal of these complicated cysts.
